Global Status Report On Vector-Borne Tropical Diseases

  • Malaria risk of varying degrees exists in 100 countries with over 40% of the world's population living in areas with malaria risk. The incidence of malaria in the world remains at 300 - 500 million clinical cases annually, with 1.5 - 2.7 million deaths. The majority of malaria deaths occur among young children.


  • Dengue is prevalent in over 100 countries and threaten the health of more than 2.5 billion people, living in tropical and subtropical regions. Dengue is the cause of an estimated 500,000 hospitalizations each year, with some 24,000 deaths each year.


  • Filariasis, most commonly recognised by the elephantiasis and male genital damage it causes, is endemic in at least 73 countries where 120 million people are infected.


  • Japanese encephalitis is found in almost all tropical countries, accounts for thousands of human cases especially in young children.


  • Flies and cockroaches are mechanical carriers of parasites, bacteria and viruses and responsible for a variety of deadly diseases.
