Insecticide Resistance
Today, the control of medically important insects and the diseases they carry still relies on the use of chemical insecticides. The widespread use of synthetic insecticides, although highly effective in curbing the vector populations, has resulted in the emergence of resistance to these and other insecticides. The development of resistance will hamper control efforts in the future. As such, the existence of resistance must be detected as early as possible so that remedial actions can be taken.

Various methods were developed to detect resistance, among these, the WHO test methods are the most widely used. These tests are very effective and are able to assess the susceptibility of insects to a particular insecticide. However the WHO test methods are often tedious, costly and difficult to use for the large scale screening of insect populations. These problems have prevented the widespread use of WHO test methods.

Obviously, rapid test methods are required to complement or even to replace the WHO test methods.
